US 2022 midterm elections… In the voting to be held on 8 November, the control of both houses of Congress is in danger. Most predictions suggest that Republicans will gain control of the House of Representatives, while the Senate could go either way. The political makeup of Congress has a huge impact on how easily Biden and his party can pass new legislation.

The erosion of income and purchasing power created by the highest inflation in the last 40 years could cause the Biden Democrats to lose control of Congress. There is a possibility that Senate control will pass to the Republicans. The Senate election will be particularly critical, as a clear victory will also signal the power of a possible Republican president as a result of the 2024 Presidential election. Biden’s complete loss of control of Congress would be a development that would limit his room for maneuver.

House Republican minority leader Kevin McCarthy, who will become president of the lower house of Congress if his party takes control next week, tweeted: “President Biden is trying to divide and deflect at a time when America needs unification – because he can’t. The American people don’t want that. “

A Reuters/Ipsos poll this week found that half of Americans believe voter fraud is a widespread problem, although such cases are extremely rare. According to the BBC’s US partner CBS, just over half of the 595 Republicans vying for the statewide post – 306 – have cast doubts on the 2020 presidential election.

What does it mean for Biden and the democrats? By-elections are typically considered a referendum held in the first two years of a presidential term – the ruling party often succumbs.

Biden’s approval rate has been low for over a year. While the Democratic vote seemed to have rebounded over the summer, high inflation and concerns about the economy re-emerged in the final phase of the midterm campaign, leaving the Democrats in a tough battle to keep both houses of Congress.

In his first two years as president, Biden passed new laws on climate change, gun control, infrastructure investment and child poverty, despite his narrow majority in Congress.

But if one of these flanks passes to the Republicans, they will have the power to stop Democratic bills from passing through Congress, and the result will be a stalemate.

A bad night for Democrats will quickly be interpreted as a sign of Biden’s continued political weakness and could renew calls for Biden’s 2024 presidency to step aside for another Democrat as the campaign season begins. But the president and his advisers insist that he will apply for reelection, and it has only happened once in the modern political era to dismiss an incumbent president in the primaries (when candidates from the same party run for the nomination).

For Trump and the Republicans… He still seems to have some interest in returning to the White House in 2024 – and the midterm elections could strengthen his hand or shatter his hopes. While he’s not at the ballot box, the dozens of candidates he chooses compete in high-profile races across the United States. Despite objections from former Republican leaders, the former President has succeeded in elevating some Senate candidates above more traditional Republican politicians, including former football player Herschel Walker in Georgia, television doctor Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania, and populist writer JD Vance in Ohio.

If they win, their political instincts may prove to be keen, this type of conservative politics has national appeal. But if Republicans fall short in Congress and it’s because of the failure of Trump’s unusually elected candidates, the former president may be blamed. Such an outcome would raise the hopes of Trump’s opponents within the party. Both Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Texas Governor Greg Abbott are up for reelection in November and can use the results as a springboard for their own campaigns to win the Republican nomination in 2024.

The 2022 midterm elections will be the first federal election since the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, when Trump supporters tried to block confirmation of Joe Biden’s electoral victory. Far from being punished by rebellion, Trump continued to question the results of this election and actively supported Republican candidates who said a Trump win had been stolen from them.
