Voters rejected the family referendum by 67 percent and the care referendum by an even larger 74 percent.

"The family change and care change referendums were comprehensively defeated with a respectable turnout," Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said on Saturday, hours before the final results were announced.

The government had declared the votes on Friday, which coincided with International Women's Day, as an opportunity to enshrine inclusivity and equality in a constitution dating back to 1937.

In the referendums, it was suggested to change Article 41. The family amendment proposed broadening the definition of family from a relationship based on marriage to “long-term relationships” such as cohabiting couples and their children. The care amendment proposed replacing references to “the mother's duties in the home” with a clause recognizing care provided by family members.
