Gas crisis and alternative sources It is well known that the Russia-Ukraine crisis has greatly affected the world economy. The restrictions become two-sided as most countries impose severe embargoes on Russia. For this reason, since the way to obtain gas passes through Russia, the gas crisis started in Europe and quickly came to the fore. It can be safely said that the gas crisis played an important role in the causes that had serious consequences for the Eurozone, such as the decline in living standards and the value of the euro and increases in interest rates. Therefore, the gas crisis has led, unsurprisingly, to the search for complementary sources.
Nuclear energy As stated, due to the current gas crisis, investors are aiming to switch to complementary sources. Thus, nuclear energy has become an important option that investors pay attention to today. In fact, the emphasis on nuclear energy became evident before the Russia-Ukraine Crisis as investors sought low-carbon alternatives to fossil fuels (Rystad Energy). According to Rystad Energy, nuclear investments are estimated to exceed $90 billion by the end of 2023. For this reason, it can be easily said that the use of nuclear energy is given serious importance and thus future investments are almost certain. Moreover, it can be easily predicted that it will increase further with the current gas scarcity and the availability of nuclear investments.
Global investments in nuclear (billion USD)… Installed nuclear power capacity by continent (Gigawatts, GW)
Conclusion? According to Rystad Energy analysts, nuclear power is already popular as it ranks second in low-carbon electricity sources. Therefore, it can be said that it has the potential to be the first in the near future. Additionally, Europe is the leader in nuclear capacity, with 170 nuclear reactors in operation, according to Rystad Energy. Therefore, the transition to nuclear power with the highest operating capacity is the most important option, as Europe faces the biggest gas problem among the regions. In summary, it can be said that with the escalation of the gas crisis, the use of nuclear energy as the main source instead of a second option is currently under serious consideration for most countries.
